about

Written in retrospect, “Mangos,” in a literal sense, is a letter to my younger self. A story of shedding and replenishing youthful naïveté. It poses that we humans never truly “grow up,” but instead, “grow into” the various stages of our lives. In a more figurative sense, Mangos is representative of a paradise that, as children, we believe will come to fruition in adulthood. As adulthood sets in, however, so do the ever-increasing responsibilities; and the series of decisions we have and continue to make only complicate things, inching us even further away from our child-like depiction of the future. We remain somewhat juvenile in all stages of our mortal evolution. And as we move into unfamiliar circumstances, that same youthful naïveté rears its head. This project is the product of nearly three years of work. My producer and I began creating “Trash” in his home studio in San Diego, California. Dan (my producer) and I discussed how we wanted the project to sound, and crafted the instrumentals from there. We collectively chose each instrument, and as Dan laid out the preliminary beat, I tinkered with the lyrics and melody. As the writing process took place, we altered the beat, and changes were made based on the vocal and lyric layout. After each song went through the writing and production stage, we recorded all 14 tracks in Dan’s home studio. There, I experimented and eventually settled on the vocal layers, harmonies, and adlibs. After each scratch recording was finalized, we took the 14-tracks into Signature Sound Studios and recorded the final product. Shortly after finalizing the recording stage, Dan moved to Philly and I moved to Los Angeles. We have since been finalizing the mixing and mastering stage apart, but are now nearly finished and in the process of drip-releasing.

lyrics

It's like Christmastime in July
You've made up your mind, your mind
You've opened your eyes
Your eyes, your eyes, your eyes
This is what you want
This is what you want, right?

Look at you now, as I sit here
Just last week, you couldn't sit still
Living at college
Might have majored economics
But all along, it didn't fit well
So, there you went
On your own time
At your mom's
Getting work done
Switched your field
Packed up every bag
To its brim, and wound up here
Still unreal
Still a pain in your mama's side
You're still a pill
But you're doing the best you can
Trying to be a better woman
Still sticking to your plan

It's like Christmastime in July
You've made up your mind
You've opened your eyes
Your eyes, your eyes, your eyes
This is what you want
This is what you want, right?

You've been trying way too hard
Now's the time to let your guard down
Give them one piece of your heart
Now's the time to lay your cards out

You've been trying way too hard
(You've been trying too hard)
Now's the time to let your guard down
(Now's the time to let your guard down)
Give them one piece of your heart
(Give them just a piece of your heart)
Now's the time to lay your cards out

Don't let the words you hear
Leave you with doubt
(Doubt, doubt, doubt)
Don't change your mind
Based on what you're without
(Without, without, without)
I've been there and I've done
What you're about to
Just remember
Remember, keep some
Good people around you

It's like Christmastime in July
(It's like Christmastime in July)
You've made up your mind, your mind
(You've made up your mind, your mind, yeah)
You've opened your eyes
(You've opened your eyes, you've opened your eyes)
Your eyes, your eyes, your eyes
This is what you want
This is what you want, right?
(This is what you want)

It's like Christmastime in July
You've made up your mind, your mind
(You've made up your mind, you've made it)
You've opened your eyes
(You've opened your eyes, you've opened your eyes)
Your eyes, your eyes, your eyes
This is what you want
(This is what you want, right?)
This is what you want, right?
